I bought my GTS from dealer A who offered a better deal than dealer B who was nearer to where I live.

Took the Vespa in to dealer B for repair work and when I collected it a couple of days ago my old Number (Licence) plate was in the pet carrier and they had put their own one on showing their business name at the bottom! Not sure why, do they think it's some kind of advertising benefit?

Anyone else come across something similar?

It's common in the US for dealers to put license plate frames on with their business name. These are easily removed if you want. (I left my Vespa Sherman Oaks frame on.)

Less common is the seller putting a decal or emblem on the rear body of the vehicle. When I have bought cars I specifically tell them I don't want that. (In my case: Enterprise and CarMax.)

If you want to advertise your business on something I own, make me an offer.

No plate frames on UK licence plates, which are laminated perspex.

Dealers can add their name to the plate, in a small font at the bottom. The swap referred to above is akin to dealers in the US swapping out a frame for their own.

Thats a real mick take!
Maybe its just a really nice bike and they want folk to think they sold it.
Just check your receipt to make sure you were not charged for it (Some main dealers do when selling used cars)

They obviously think your GTS is smart enough to promote their business which is paying you a compliment. On the other hand it's a cheeky way to advertise themselves without asking you. Either way, they should have asked permission to do it.

Put your old plate back on, take their plate back to the shop and ask them how much they are going to pay you to advertise their company.

Do you remember the days when car dealers would install an emblem that required them drill a couple of holes in the car to attach it?! When I was a kid, my dad ordered a 1966 Chevy II from the dealer and specifically told them he did not want them to drill holes in the trunk lid and attach their emblem. After waiting for the car to arrive, he went to pick it up and there was the emblem. He refused to take delivery and demanded (and got) his deposit back. He went to a different dealer and bought his new car (after waiting again for delivery).

In the UK, the more subtle practice was adopted for car dealers to place a vinyl sticker along the bottom of the rear window. Very few people removed them, so it was many years of free advertising for the dealerships.

Not sure I'd want anything changed/swapped on my vehicle without my permisson... though free Michelin tyres, OEM brakes and fully synthetic oil are welcome.

I did get some plates made up for my brand new car at my local dealer. They were very good, but didn't have the vehicle I wanted in stock. Having a good relationship with them, I agreed to have the plates swapped just to wind up the competitor that I actually purchased the car from. 🤣

They got it done in minutes. The only time I saw anyone move faster was after a 15 mile walk in the sun, having spotted a pub.

Being a new, rare, turbo thing it got a lot of attention I guess.

I've noticed recently sold Vespas from Santa Rosa's RevMoto have a decal behind the knees, where the two haves of the body meet.

Installing a frame around the plate at time of sale is fine. Changing it when servicing is bullshit

I don't remember that ever happening in Los Angeles. I do remember seeing cars from other parts of the country with 3-D dealer names attached to the trunk. I would have done what your dad did.

They gave you the old one. No harm, no foul. They are counting on you to be too lazy or too inept or that you just won't care to change it back.

You are lucky the dealer B serviced it. In Hawaii you are looking at a six month wait to get an appointment for anything by buying something out-of-state, shipping it in, then expecting the local Hawaii dealer here to service you. You will get your appointment eventually.

I have checked beforehand my purchases contrasting mainland price versus local Hawaii price for cars and bikes a few times for the price savings, including my recent 2022 Piaggio Liberty Baci Perugina 150cc from CycleCity Honolulu. The numbers are close enough within a thousand or less for the cars. (And no need to wait months to ship it). So I am very happy with my local dealer pricing and their service. Especially my local dealer CycleCity Honolulu did so much for free for me like helping me ship my scooter here to Hilo, literally by ship from Honolulu, doing everything right away and top shape treatment!!!

I could have saved anywhere from $300 to $500 maybe, and I mean MAYBE by buying scooter out of LA or San Diego. And I would of have a bear of a time getting it licensed and everything else paperwork just getting my product off the pier. Plus I don't understand,,, I just don't understand why anyone would want to starve the local person who is ending up helping them.

However I do agree that the dealer putting the Dealer logo onto the license plate holder without telling you was rude. Since they gave you back the original maybe they thought somebody at their store already got an ok from you. Are you able to let it go and be proud to support them after the fine job they did on your ride.

Yes I can let it go, it really doesn't bother me at all I was just interested in their motives.

We are talking about very small letters at the bottom of a number plate that I'm pretty sure no one gives a 2nd look to.

Aloha Craig. I think it was rude but it seems to have worked out. I am glad Coddy is ok with it now. And Dealer B might have thought they had permission. I hope that their relationship should do well in the future.

Anyway, our family station wagon had the drilled in holes of the dealer name on it too. It was a different ugly font from the FORD lettering. In the 1960s I also remember mom buying a SONY color TV delivered to our house. The appliance dealer rescued the included rabbit ears antenna from the box, then selling the antenna right back to mom as he did this glorified setup to plug the TV into the wall outlet. Those were the days, I tell you,,,

I hate those damn frames so much that the first thing I did when I got my new-to-me Primavera was to take the frame advertising a local dealer off. I usually buy a nice blank one to put on, but this time I took a paint pen and outlined the plate in black. I thought it was temporary but I actually dig it a lot and have just kept it that way.
