Instructions on how to remove and replace the atomizer bush:

https://www.dellortoshop.com/drawings/instructions_on_how_to_replace_atomiser_bush_on_dellorto_vhsb_carburetors.jpg

Might not need to remove the venturi insert to swap the atomizer bushing.

Half screw in the fn266 and hit it with a hammer. The brass bushing just bangs out. Heat it up first and it will be easier.

This one is more usual.

I keep an old atomiser cut in half for banging the bushing right through. It's not very often they need changing though.

Countdown started for another long wait for a single part that costs less than shipping to come from the UK to NYC!

eurocarb.com only place I could find that bush.

Finally got the stuck venturi insert out of the carb body. No loctite, just varnish at the base of the insert acting as loctite.

Had to use lots of heat and more than gentle persuasion with a hammer and thin punch tool down through the screw holes in the float to smack the insert out from the bottom.

Good news is the bush came out of the insert when the insert came out. But the bush stayed in the carb body in the hole! Using jacks suggestion of threading in the old atomizer and knocking it out from the top worked fine after some extremely heavy blows. I protected the old atomizer from blows with a small piece of scrap wood laying around the garage. That bush was seriously stuck in there!

Fn266 atomizer stack. And then compared to the dq266 stack (bush is still the one for FN stack).

If I'm understanding this right, what is cool about this carb is that you can swap a 34mm venturi insert for a 39mm venturi insert!

New bush for the DQ atomizer came today along with the correct punch tool for removal and installation. Plus I also picked up a couple more incomplete VHSB 34 and 38 carbs which came today. Spares for other projects. I'm thinking of a VHSB 34 carb for the Egig 170 smallframe build whenever I get to that.

The old bush for FN atomizer seems to have a much smaller air hole than then 7mm one on the DQ bush. I'm assuming its probably around 4mm since I saw another bush for the same carb listed as 4mm.

left is new 7mm opening bush for DQ. Right is original bush for FN.

notice the new one on left has threads at the base instead of near the head like on the right one. This was the hang-up when trying to swap to DQ from FN.

Well now that I have a VHSB 34 and 38 carb side by side.. I see the carb bodies are not exactly the same and interchangeable. The slide tube section is the same, and both slides fit in either or. The inlets are the same with one slight difference being a narrow brass bushing inside the center air inlet at the base of the intake side on the 38 carb body vs no brass bush inside the same air inlet passage. The outlets are slightly larger on the 38 carb, by about 0.7". And the fuel intake and choke sides are flipped on opposite sides for each carb.

VHSB 38 carb came with same FN atomizer stack except a 260 atomizer compared to a 266 atomizer on the 34. Main jet is 185, k32 needle, a 50 choke jet, and a 33 idle jet with no mixer in the idle circuit. I assume the previous owner lost the idle mixer and there should be one in there. One other minor difference on glance is the floats are black 3.5gram ones instead of white 4 gram ones.

two VHSB 34 on the outside and VHSB 38 in middle.

34 left, no brass bush in center air passage. 38 right with brash bush in air passage.

38

38 float lid has an external vent with tube that goes to the top of the float bowl. 34 doesn't.

38. venturi insert is a 12 instead of 8.5.

38 slide. #55

38

Finally found a comparison of all the different VHSB carbs detailing the differences.

My VHSB 38 QS carb I believe is set up for 4 stroke engines, so it would require replacing the jets and slide for 38 DS carb setup as detailed in these docs.

The 38mm carb is set up for 4 stroke engines. Jack suggests all it needs to convert back to 2 stroke engines is to drill the brass air restrictor in that center hole at the bottom of the bell intake. That and changing all the jets to correct for two stroke and adding a washer below the atomizer so it doesn't bottom out.

On that note.. I've reassembled the 34 carb with correct bush in the venturi insert. After replacing all the gaskets using the gasket kit, I'm left wondering where this brass washer is supposed to go?

Well, aww shit!

The float needle valve on this VHSB 38 was seized so damn much that I broke the head off trying to remove the valve! Hoping I can heat up the case enough to break it free and use a screw/bolt removal bit to get it out of the case and not ruin the threads.

Trying to find solution to broken needle valve in casing.

Bolt removal tool didn't work cause the brass is too weak so the tool just grinds through it.

I drilled out the center of the broken valve with a quarter inch bit. Tried to get the closest size to drill it out, which is 5/16" but I couldn't get the bit to safely center and work through, so I left it at quarter inch.

For anyone interested, and for posterity, the needle valve on vhsb carbs is threaded with a 9mmx1.0 thread.

I can't find a correct 9x1.0 tap in my kit or on McMaster website, so I'll have to search for suitable tap and die of that size, then I gather I'll be able to just tap it out and that will clear out the excess crap. Trick will be getting the tap to work very shallow cause the hole the valve sits in is very shallow.
