A wee drop of single malt here this evening. Mrs Ironfoot favours whisky that's been fully matured in sherry casks. Fairly hard to come by. We got this Bunnahabhain oloroso cask at the distillery on Islay. When it's gone, it's gone.
I'm having an Arran 10, a fine whisky that is quite widely available. It was ralfydotcom's whisky of the year 2021.

Fritz,
I got the same stuff years ago in Germany. I was in Salzburg watching the bartender take minutes drawing a beer tap while pushing off the stacking up foam. He obviously knew I was a Yank and said "that is not beer where you come from". That German and Austrian beer was unbelievably good. The wide spread success and growth in numbers of local micro-brewers is putting out some good beer here. All the travel to Europe has produced some beer folks that came home and said, we can do that. So thank you folks from across the Pond. Remember, imitation is the highest form of flattery. Burp! Bob Copeland |

And then there is this little joy. It is the best gin I have ever tasted and is produced only 3 or 4 miles from my home at Trail Distilling.

We are into our 2022 Whisky and Wine Advent Calendars. Day 3. Steve and I split the whisky when it is Scotch or Rye but if it's Burbon he gets the whole mini bottle. Half bottle of wine gets served with dinner.

Jess,
You are right. American beer was brewed from German Americans. Despite the current trend to heavy dark beers here, I do like the lighter brews. My favorite beer is Coors. The tap stuff out of kegs seemed to taste so much better. God knows I drank much in college. I went to undergraduate school in St Cloud Minnesota. Probably a local populations of 60% German. The keg parties with brats and polish sausages where super. It seemed to me that the darker beers in Germany, on tap, were actually really smooth. Bob C

Personally I prefer darker beers but we had Cali Creamin in the nitrogen tap keg this as our summer ale which is almost gone. We have 3 taps in our home bar. The other two were Gypsy Raindance , a local cider and Schulz Bräu Brewing Dunkel on a co2 tap. For me, the beer changes with the season. Right now I'm drinking my own dark seasonal that gets my 93 year-old father in-law's stamp of approval.

Haven't drank much (alcohol) since my vacation trip to Wisconsin in July.
I do have quite a few beverages in the queue to drink, though: Two 16-oz cans of Barrel Aged Chocolate Raspberry Imperial Stout from Untitled Art. For Christmas last year, my wife bought me a Johnnie Walker Sampler set with 10 or 12 small (50ml) bottles - 2 each of 5 or 6 "flavors" of Johnnie Walker. I know it has Red, Black, Blue, gold, and one or two others. We still haven't opened it, as the time hasn't seemed right. Now she's on a medication that precludes her from drinking alcohol, so enjoying it together will be difficult. She can handle a taste, but not a full drink. I'm thinking of cracking it open over the holiday break. Maybe we can share one of each flavor, and I can save the others for a future tasting. Either way, I'll be sure to report back here with my tasting notes. |

Choice in the US is more limited and for a single single malt calendar that ships from Scotland is bloody expensive. Here's a couple of snaps I took at an independent tasting room this year. It was just a small place, but three of the walls were completely lined with whisky. Almost all single malts, every bottle open and available to sample. I was on driving duty. No whisky for me that day. not my home bar

Wine,
Living in Europe for a time, I got smitten with wine for dinner. I even had a glass of red with my late night dinner Hot Dog last night. I know many of you might have real refined tastes in wine. I have a small glass every night with dinner. I really go low cost on red wine. Barefoot Sweet Red Blend $4.99 is a staple on my table. Yes, you are all invited. Bob Copeland The low brow wine man. |

cdwise wrote: Did the tasting room give you the driver to go drams? When we did a whisky tour in Scotland May 2019 they gave small sealed sample cups to our driver to consume after his day of driving was done. The tasting room in the picture was different. More of a tasting room/shop/cafe. You could buy any of the whiskies in small amounts. They just decant it into half bottles, quarter bottles, or miniatures. So I could have taken something away, but decided not to. The choice on offer was a bit overwhelming if anything. Plus I'd already picked out a nice bottle earlier on the same trip. It's easy to get overstocked at home. cdwise wrote: Have you been to the Pot Still in Glasgow?
