I must admit, American beer has come an awful long way in the past few years. There was a time when it was truly tragic but thats not the case now. The problem is, it was great fun making fun of yankee beer back then and I just can't give it up.

One day I'll grow up I suppose... but I doubt it.

A wee drop of single malt here this evening. Mrs Ironfoot favours whisky that's been fully matured in sherry casks. Fairly hard to come by. We got this Bunnahabhain oloroso cask at the distillery on Islay. When it's gone, it's gone.

I'm having an Arran 10, a fine whisky that is quite widely available. It was ralfydotcom's whisky of the year 2021.

Fritz,

I got the same stuff years ago in Germany. I was in Salzburg
watching the bartender take minutes drawing a beer tap while
pushing off the stacking up foam. He obviously knew I was
a Yank and said "that is not beer where you come from".

That German and Austrian beer was unbelievably good.

The wide spread success and growth in numbers of local
micro-brewers is putting out some good beer here. All
the travel to Europe has produced some beer folks that
came home and said, we can do that.

So thank you folks from across the Pond. Remember,
imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Burp!

And then there is this little joy. It is the best gin I have ever tasted and is produced only 3 or 4 miles from my home at Trail Distilling.

The American beer industry was largely founded by Germans. Even Anheuser-Busch, maker of the dreaded Budweiser, was founded by German immigrants, using German brewing techniques. All of those American pisswater beers originated as German Pilsners, in fact.

So it's kind of funny to me that your German bartender was casting so much shade.

Just sayin'.

We are into our 2022 Whisky and Wine Advent Calendars. Day 3. Steve and I split the whisky when it is Scotch or Rye but if it's Burbon he gets the whole mini bottle. Half bottle of wine gets served with dinner.

Jess,

You are right. American beer was brewed from German
Americans. Despite the current trend to heavy dark beers
here, I do like the lighter brews.

My favorite beer is Coors. The tap stuff out of kegs seemed
to taste so much better. God knows I drank much in college.

I went to undergraduate school in St Cloud Minnesota.
Probably a local populations of 60% German. The
keg parties with brats and polish sausages where super.

It seemed to me that the darker beers in Germany, on tap,
were actually really smooth.

I would have given my left nut for a decent West Coast ipa in Germany but ended up having to go to Spain or Italy to find one. As my German cousin said, "Reinheitsgblech!"

You can have your IPAs. Hops are good for preventing beer from spoiling on a sailing ship from Blighty to India. Personally I prefer darker beers but we had Cali Creamin in the nitrogen tap keg this as our summer ale which is almost gone. We have 3 taps in our home bar. The other two were Gypsy Raindance , a local cider and Schulz Bräu Brewing Dunkel on a co2 tap.

3 taps! I'm jealous.
For me, the beer changes with the season. Right now I'm drinking my own dark seasonal that gets my 93 year-old father in-law's stamp of approval.

Haven't drank much (alcohol) since my vacation trip to Wisconsin in July.

I do have quite a few beverages in the queue to drink, though:

Two 16-oz cans of Barrel Aged Chocolate Raspberry Imperial Stout from Untitled Art.

For Christmas last year, my wife bought me a Johnnie Walker Sampler set with 10 or 12 small (50ml) bottles - 2 each of 5 or 6 "flavors" of Johnnie Walker. I know it has Red, Black, Blue, gold, and one or two others. We still haven't opened it, as the time hasn't seemed right. Now she's on a medication that precludes her from drinking alcohol, so enjoying it together will be difficult. She can handle a taste, but not a full drink. I'm thinking of cracking it open over the holiday break. Maybe we can share one of each flavor, and I can save the others for a future tasting. Either way, I'll be sure to report back here with my tasting notes.

They not only exist but there are several available in the UK we can't get here from mixed whisky boxes to high end single malts. Choice in the US is more limited and for a single single malt calendar that ships from Scotland is bloody expensive. Plus I'd have to have it shipped to my brothers house as Tennessee doesn't allow alcohol to be shipped direct to the consumer (and avoid state liquor taxes and "dr" counties)

We we built this house since we are on the river our subdirequired a walk out basement. Not wanting a junk collecting room we put in a home bar and dance floor. When I went to look for a kegerator there was a clearance at a local store where I could buy two for about the same as one not on sale. I converted one for nitrogen tap and put a double tap on the other,

I'm sure I would baulk at the price of 24 miniatures. I tend to visit a few distilleries each year in Scotland, but usually in spring and summer. That might explain why I've not encountered a whisky advent calendar.

Here's a couple of snaps I took at an independent tasting room this year. It was just a small place, but three of the walls were completely lined with whisky. Almost all single malts, every bottle open and available to sample.

I was on driving duty. No whisky for me that day. Picard emoticon

Wine,

Living in Europe for a time, I got smitten with wine for dinner.
I even had a glass of red with my late night dinner Hot Dog last
night.

I know many of you might have real refined tastes in wine. I have
a small glass every night with dinner. I really go low cost on red wine.

Barefoot Sweet Red Blend $4.99 is a staple on my table. Yes,
you are all invited.

Did the tasting room give you the driver to go drams? When we did a whisky tour in Scotland May 2019 they gave small sealed sample cups to our driver to consume after his day of driving was done. Have you been to the Pot Still in Glasgow? Amazing selection with knowledgeable bartenders.

Here in Knoxville we have the Jig & Reel with nearly 1,000 different scotches on the shelves. Different tasting flights each week along with live music and Jan session of Scots, Irish and Appalachian music nightly.

On a distillery tour, usually I'll just have a wee sip of a couple of different expressions, then I will take away the driver's dram. Sometimes it's a sealed cup, sometimes it's a miniature bottle.

The tasting room in the picture was different. More of a tasting room/shop/cafe. You could buy any of the whiskies in small amounts. They just decant it into half bottles, quarter bottles, or miniatures. So I could have taken something away, but decided not to. The choice on offer was a bit overwhelming if anything. Plus I'd already picked out a nice bottle earlier on the same trip. It's easy to get overstocked at home.

Nope, never been to Glasgow, even. Been all over Scotland but never spent much time in the cities.

On our whisky tour we went to an independent shop/blender that had been in business for several centuries. They didn't bottle on demand though, or if they did it wasn't mentioned.

Is that even possible? We typically have between a half and dozen different scotches.

Jig & Reel has more Scotch than American whiskey but also varieties from all over the world. We were pleasantly surprised by Indian Roy Tiger my husband was given for Christmas last year.

I'm not a fan of corn based whiskey as the American varies are spelled. I prefer malt followed by rye but I had a good rice whisky at the BreckenridgeWhiskey Festival.we expect to return to Raasay on Isle of Raasay off Skye where his family is from but probably not until at least fall of 2023 or spring 2024. The Raasay distillery just won a bunch of awards.

ha, yeah same. [goes off to count] Nine bottles plus a few souvenir miniatures. A couple of those bottles are one-offs that are almost empty and we are reluctant to finish. But it feels too many to me. I've told myself to not get anymore till I've slimmed the number down a bit. We don't drink it fast enough, that's the problem.

Cheers to you Bob. Just serve it in a fancy glass!

People are easily fooled by preconceived expectations about food and drink. Whisky is the same, there's an awful lot of hot air talked in the industry. I enjoy the theatre of it, but you've got to keep your feet on the ground.
