Generally speaking, MV avoids forum subdivisions whenever possible. I realize it is common among many (even most) forums to add categories and subforums for every possible variation of an idea, but I am officially on record as believing that those forums are doing it wrong.

Forum subdivision makes people hunt for new content, and topics that are outside the main forum (General Discussion, in our case) tend to see much, much, much less traffic. You can see examples of that right here at MV, for the very few times that we've gone against our guiding principles and created subforums.

This is especially relevant for a niche forum like Modern Vespa, where we don't have a huge worldwide audience to begin with. Subdividing MV's audience would tend to fragment what little critical mass we have into sub-parts that, together, make up less than their sum.

TL;DR: Sorry, it's unlikely to happen.

although it works this is a bit ouch. at first test I didn't instinctively recognise it as a pull down. maybe a down arrow on the button to the right of it's text.

alternatively the classic clickable headings on the table of results

Possibly, though it is styled as something that is clickable / tap-able. The behavior is not new -- just the pivot point.

A classic, but surprisingly difficult to implement in this case.

This is now implemented. When a moderator removes (or restores) a topic, a notification is generated to the user, linking to the topic and the forum that it resides in.

I've also added a notification for a moved topic. So, for instance, if a topic is moved from General Discussion to NSM (a task that it seems we perform almost daily) the topic owner will be notified of the move.

One of my pet peeves of forum software is how quotes in replies are formatted. The quoted text appearing first in the response means that truncated search results are often a list of the same quote over and over, vs the terms which I might have searched to begin with. Makes it difficult at times to find a good response based on my search terms.

My own tiny fight against this in years past, was to religiously move my cursor back to the top of the reply field after quoting another post. I see I no longer have to do this. I have no idea how or when you changed this but it's great not seeing all those quotes in search results.

Thank you!

I'm glad someone noticed! In refactoring the search function here at MV, I've gone to the trouble of stripping out all the quotes (and quite a few other useless bits) from posts before they get put into the search index. This saves substantial space in the index, speeds up searches, and avoids the Groundhog Day phenomenon when viewing search results. It's a win-win-win.

And you are very much welcome.

This would be the coveted "personal ban" feature.

No, it's never been implemented. Sorry.

For timeouts instead of an outright ban can users be restricted to NSM for punishment as and when deemed appropriate. This might provide better attitude adjustment than stewing at home.

Both. Generally, "Banned" means they are banned. There is one member with "Banned" as a custom title, though. And if you see them posting, you can be assured that they are not, in fact, banned.

I know you're kidding (or maybe you're not) but we do have a custom feature I created called "forum confinement", which restricts a user to a single forum.

It was not conceived as an exile feature, though -- it was designed to keep one specific asshat (of the NSM/vintage variety) from stirring up shit in General Discussion. He thought it was funny to yank the chains of the modern riders, who he considered inferior. He was a world-class jerk, and quite proud of it.

That user disappeared a long time ago, though, and I've never needed to apply the forum confinement feature to anyone else.

There have, in fact, been a handful of long-term members that have been banned. And believe me, banning an established member is generally the very last thing I want to do, and only done as a last resort when they go off the rails. But it has happened.

The one user with "Banned" as a custom title is in fact a moderator, and he could change his title if he wanted. I guess he likes leaving people confused.

If not already on the list and you deem it desirable and doable...

- please enable adding photos to PMs
- enable adding photos directly from the Mac photos like happens on the iPhone rather than having to export it to a jpeg first
- include a "List" function above the post editing window. I often can't remember the list commands

Thanks! Miguel

That was a feature for many years. We only recently removed attachments for PMs (a year or two ago?) because it was a very, very serious liability, being completely unmoderated and unsupervised. This feature definitely will not return, sorry.

This has been on my list for quite a while. The delay is actually due to the lack of support for the newer image format in one of the open source utilities we use to process photos. This may have changed since last I looked, so I'll take the action to look into it again and see if anything has changed.

This was another feature that was present for many years, but I removed it a year or two ago. The list utility did not work well, and most people found it completely bewildering. In fact, I also found it completely bewildering, and I am supposed to know how this stuff works. As it didn't work very well, hardly anyone ever used lists.

WTF?! I think I am insulted.
I will have you know kind sir that our sub-forum is a textbook example of civility and temperance. *Ahem* (Mind you I am comparing that to the anarchy of the BBS circa 2006.)

(Seriously, this made me laugh. I had visions of posters being confined only to the For Sale/Wanted forum and constantly having their posts deleted for failure to format correctly.)

Okay, assuming we are in fact talking about searching by titles, here's what that would look like. Note that it's not just adding one more option, it's adding two, plus additional words to the original two options.

I'm also unhappy with the terms here -- using the word Topic (when we are searching by topic TITLES) tends to add more of the same confusion that just happened a few posts up.
I actually got quite confused by this change - I hadn't noticed the new default was to look only in the titles of threads and spent a bunch of time looking for some content yesterday. The older look inside the thread functionality as default was what I was expecting and I didn't even read the options because I "knew" how it worked already.

Thinking about long URLs. Would it be easy to implement the automatic stripping of all the tracking info and shorten the links? For example everything after a question mark in the URL.

For some well-known URLs, yes. But in general, no. The part after the question mark is often (but not always) important -- even MV uses query parameters to function properly in lots of situations.

To stip an URL of the irrelevant stuff, you usually have to know something about how the URL is structured.

Makes sense. Some of it is easy for mildly informed humans, though I can see how it could be a real pain to implement that human knowledge.

Exactly this. I can often look at a link and guess what parts are irrelevant. Even after a lifetime of writing code, though, I'm unable to imbue the code with that knowledge.

I discovered our local news site lets you add whatever you want to urls. Hilarity ensued.

I'll look into it. Thanks!

The complication, of course, is that none of the search parameters actually come from the URL -- they are stored as session variables.

bug:

opened my browser and clicked refresh on my existing MV tab which is the new posts pseudo forum. it prompted me to login (don't know why) so I did and then it navigated me to https://modernvespa.com/forum/new&start=0 which gives a 404

Interesting. Looks like the post-login redirect that the synthetic forum handler provides erroneously included a "start=0", as removing the "&start=0" provides the expected page.

Which begs the question: does pagination work properly on the "New Posts" page?

I see the problem now. Derp.

Needs to be a question mark, not an ampersand.

Derp.

This is now fixed, in two ways: if you're on the first page of the synthetic forum, then no "start=0" will be added to the post-login redirect. And, of course, if it does need to add the start variable (which is how pagination works) then it will actually function correctly.

Thanks for the bug report, once again!

As for why you were asked to log in, that's probably impenetrable. Could be that your authentication token (cookie) expired, or was maybe removed automatically by your browser after some interval? Hard to say. If it keeps happening, let me know.

It does not work with "where", "who","when" and "how" either…
