Heading-off for the short run down to the nearby town of Hartlepool
A WWII 4.5 inch gun undergoing restoration on Hartlepool promenade. The area, along with other coastal towns were bombarded by the Imperial German Navy during World War One, causing much destruction and loss of life.
Restored coastal defences, with a museum and regular re-enactments by local enthusiasts.

The remains of the Medieval town wall, and the beach which was today rather full of stones and slippery sea-weed!
A closer view of the ancient town wall, carved by hand from the local sandstone that runs along the coast. It originally completely encircled the settlement, and they say, was designed to keep out Scottish raiders!
The marina (which had originally been industrial docks) with its many small boats.
The 'Historic Quay' - actually a modern recreation, although both of the ships berthed there, Paddle Steamer Wingfield Castle and HMS Trincomalee are authentic.
On my return, just a mile from home.
