If you want to change the oil and filter on your 300 HPE while it's on the center stand, I recommend getting and doing the following to avoid spilling oil all over the floor. First, purchase the three items in the pic. I got all three off Amazon for cheap. You need an ordinary oil drain pan, a "Form a Funnel" funnel and a Lisle angled funnel. Secondly, remove the chrome exhaust guard. You'll find that it's a heck of a lot easier to refill the oil and pull the dipstick without it on the bike. Third, shape one end of the bendable green funnel to fit below the oil drain nut and the other end into the drain pan. Fourth, Remove drain nut and screen and drain the oil. Do the same thing with the bendable funnel to remove the oil filter. Fifth, Replace both the oil drain nut and oil filter. Position the angled funnel into the oil fill hole and refill with the proper amount of oil. Replace the exhaust guard. Easy Peasy and I guarantee you won't spill a drop of oil. Have fun!

I got a Mity Vac hydraulic pump (model MV 7300) when I had my Subaru BRZ. It does leave a few ounces in a car left in the pan but so does manually draining it.
On my GTS, I use the vac to pull out what I can, then remove the drain plug, tilt the bike a bit off the center stand and get a few more ounces out. I finish it off by taking off the filter and the job is much cleaner. |

Thanks for sharing your oil change method. The 'form a funnel' looks like a useful accessory and it would probably be helpful when draining the transmission oil as well. Just to add....

+1 on the form a funnel. They're simply awesome. Used to be made in Tipton, PA by Pig (the absorbent mat company) but now made in the Midwest somewhere.

I would like to add: For the oil change, the engine/oil should be at operating temperature. (Measure oil level when cold / oil change = warm).

Good ideas for draining. For filling, I remove the pet carrier, insert the hose from a 'filler funnel' that I've had for decades (has increment markings, 1 liter max). Works for me.

What is better about the "Form A Funnel" product than a sheet of aluminum foil?

Can't say I've found inadequate thickness to be a problem when using aluminum foil as an "oil ramp." Maybe I've used a folded-over piece. Hot oil, gear oil, engine oil, no issues.
To be clear, I'm not knocking the luxury of one hundred twenty-five thousandths of rich Corinthian Form-A-Funnel. Just would prefer not to have to clean, store, and find it. |
