Looking to move a scooter from Florida to PA/NJ/NY

Anybody have any experience renting a pickup truck one way? Hertz seems to offer it but I'm getting run when trying to find out what locations allow their vehicles to leave and never return to them.

I am also open to a cram-situation in a Honda CRV or something along those lines. I'm moving a vintage smallframe.

For work, I rent from National who often offers pickups as part of their fleet. They allow one way rentals, but not on all vehicles. You are not allow to tow with them, if that is what you are planning to do. The better vehicle selection will often be at major airports vs. the small suburban locations.

Recently I rented a 144" Ford Transit van from Budget to move a motorcycle from Portland, OR to San Diego, CA. I had it for five days and it cost me about $800. I think I paid a premium because it was in the peak of college move-out season. In my case I needed the security of locking the bike in the van with gear for a few overnights of city street parking.

Budget let me reserve online and the price at pickup did not change. No weird scammy up-charges.

Filling the tank a few times added a few hundred to the overall cost.

I actually did the drive in one day… Sort of rental van iron butt.

That will easily fit into a minivan, which I've personally rented one-way before.

You don't need to rent anything - take one or both back seats out of the CRV. Lots of room for a small frame.

Tierney has the answer. If you own or could borrow a friends CRV. With
the back seats out, the storage room is huge.

If you know anyone with a Honda Element, it's even better than a CRV and you don't have to remove the rear seats. Both rear seats pull up and hang from the side. I've been using my 2009 Element to haul mopeds and scooters for the last 14 years.

You might have better luck with U-Haul.
Just go to their web site and reserve what you need.
They can move it to the location you want or you can pick it up where it is.
You will probably get a pretty good deal moving a truck out of Florida right now since they are all headed into Florida.

Just a thought……I drive from my home near Richmond, VA to NJ every 3-4 months. If you can somehow get the scoot here, I'd be more than happy to get it to the NJ area when I go back again in a few months. I'm actually going to the Carlisle, PA auto swap meet next weekend, so my next trip to the area will be around February/March. This kind of bike "shipment" is very common within the vintage moped community. I've helped out a few people in the past and it always worked out well.

It's the same here but...
When they have a lot trucks (or trailers) in certain geographic areas and they need to get them moved to where the action is...
They will drop the rate substantially.
I would bet the rate from Florida to NY is considerably lower than that of NY to Florida right now. Likewise, Texas to California.

Sometimes it's even cheaper to get the truck as a "local" rental make a round trip out of it.

I had a few haulers not return my calls, a few quote more than $800 and a few with scheduling uncertainties due to the late season mountain pass snow down I-5. So not so easy in this case.

One way is expensive. How about renting SUV/minivan in NY/NJ/PA for a week, with unlimited miles. Drive down, load scoot, drive back. Easy Peasy.

Update: thanks for the help everyone. Switching it up for a car with larger trunk space is likely the way we're going to go.

So far, it's $19 per ticket for a one way flight to FL from Philly, then about 200-300 dollars a day to rent a Rav4 rental car.

I'll use my own car insurance to cover the vehicle + AAA discounts and gas.

Below is a chart of prices from the internet, but I spoke on the phone with a Budget location and got cheaper rates.

This is the National App. I used Orlando because it was in the center of the state and offered the best general starting point.

If you choose to use one of the big rental agencies, I recommend signing up for their loyalty program. typically free. Depending on the program they can have the car ready for you, and you skip the counter.

I assume West Palm beach has all of the major car agencies at their airport. It might all be convertibles and golf carts though.

When you rent from a car agency by an airport, you pay a premium for the convenience. Better to get at least a few miles away and the price will usually be lower.

thanks for the heads up on National. I'll be sure to look into it.

Yeah, I'll be avoiding the airport at all costs.

As it were, scheduling issues is pushing this trip back a few months. I'll see that bike in 2024.
